This five-star hotel near Marylebone has a showstopping glass atrium, where you’ll find its standout restaurant and champagne bar
Location
The Landmark London is a 10-minute walk from both Baker Street and Edgware Road Tube stations, and around a 15-minute stroll from upmarket Marylebone. You can enjoy outdoor space nearby at Regent’s Park, which is within a similar walking distance. For culture, The Wallace Collection museum offers free entry and is only a few minutes from Marylebone High Street, too.

The vibe

There’s an atmosphere of quiet elegance and calm when entering The Landmark London (despite its proximity to a busy street). The hotel’s grand exterior remains from its previous incarnation, the Grand Central Hotel, which was built in 1899.
From the entrance lobby you can see the impressive light-filled central area, the Winter Garden, which is at the heart of the hotel’s ambience. This glass-roofed atrium is set within a surrounding eight-storey building front, with windows to bedrooms and suites overlooking the Champagne Bar and Winter Garden Restaurant. Vibrant fresh flowers are used throughout, from large artistic arrangements in public spaces to smaller vases on restaurant tables.
Service
Service is impeccable and thoughtful, from the warm welcome at reception to the attention to detail with dietary requirements shown at dinner. We saw a member of staff kindly managing an impatient guest who was demanding access to their room well before check-in, and swiftly resolving the situation.
During the evening, the staff made an effort to mark a special celebration, with the Winter Garden pianist playing “Happy Birthday” to a guest and the team taking group photos of them with their family.
Bed and bath

There are 300 rooms in total across six floors – including 51 suites – and 150 of these overlook the Winter Garden. The rooms are particularly spacious for an inner city hotel (starting from 55 sq m), which adds to the feeling of luxury. The decor is neutral and exudes classic rather than contemporary elegance. Standout features include the marble bathrooms and high ceilings.
All bathrooms have a bath and shower and are stocked with toiletries from The White Company. Our room opened out onto the Winter Garden, so natural light flooded in from the glass ceiling. We could also hear the pianist playing music until 10:30pm, which added a special element (without the sound being loud enough to disrupt sleep).

Food and drink
The Winter Garden Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. In this expansive space, (fake) palm trees loom large and add to the grandeur, while there’s soft lighting in the evening for added cosiness.
You can order light bites all day at the Champagne Bar. This is a glamorous setting with greenery, gold trim and plush fabrics, and is under the same glass atrium roof. It’s worth noting that drinks can be pricey here (with a small glass of wine starting at £12), but this is a place you come to for a treat.

Downstairs, the Great Central Pub by Matt Fletcher is a gastropub offering hearty classics such as burgers and Sunday roasts. Alternatively, The Mirror Bar is more tucked-away spot for cocktails.
We ate dinner and breakfast at the Winter Garden Restaurant, which has seasonal and a la carte menus. The restaurant offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, with the team happy to help steer you through menu choices. Standout dishes at dinner include hand-dived Orkney scallops, beef wellington, and Yorkshire rhubarb panna cotta. Alongside continental buffet choices, there are hot plates at breakfast, and I was impressed to see a selection of fresh, gluten-free pastries on offer, too.
Facilities

There’s a 24-hour gym with spa treatment rooms at the hotel, including those specifically for couples. The spa and health club was closed during our visit, as it’s being refurbished ahead of reopening in late spring (the official date is yet to be confirmed).

Check-in/check-out

Family-friendly?
Yes. While the hotel has a distinctly grown-up vibe, children are welcome. Kids under five eat free at breakfast, and there are children’s menu options and family rooms.
