The Cheapest, Chicest Hotels in Rome for an Italian City Break

Rome’s neighborhoods are compact and fairly distinct, so it’s important to choose a place to stay based on what you want from your Roman vacation.

Campo Marzio is one of the most elegant and historic parts of the city, home to beautiful buildings and boutiques that have been in the same family for generations. It’s extremely well-connected, sitting alongside the Tiber and also encompassing Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna, as well as chic Via di Ripetta, Via del Babuino, and shopping boulevard Via del Corso.

Trastevere is a lively neighborhood set slightly away from the major landmarks, but with hole-in-the-wall bars, vintage shops, and excellent, casual trattorias. Those wanting a quieter, more upscale experience can head to Prati, located on the other side of the Tiber River, away from the major landmarks (and tourists) but with very good restaurants and local shopping.
